The Trip - by Meg James
My animation ‘The trip’ is a story following a girl who travels the world to explore different beekeeping cultures outside of the UK. The aim of my project is to educate young adults from 18-24 about how interesting and rewarding beekeeping can be; without including the stereotypical retiree who has one hive in their back garden. All of the scenes featured in my animation are based on real places in order to maintain the integrity of my message. All too often the ‘save the bee’ campaigns are tailored towards young children or the older generation; however it is the young adults who will go on to campaign and find new ways to help save the dwindling bee population. My aim for this animation is to combine my love of narrative with a real issue that affects our society today and educate the viewer on a topic that is very close to my heart.
After conversations with the lovely people at the British Beekeeping Association I have permission to include their wonderful charity in the credits of my animation. Head on over to bbka.org.uk/ for more information on how you can get involved.
This is my final animation for the convergence/divergence unit on BA Hons Illustration at Arts University Bournemouth; I hope you enjoy.

Here's a video of a freshly hatched drone bee. Notice it's big eyes compared with worker bees. The drones are the male bees and workers are all females. There are several hundred drones in a hive compared to 60,000 or more worker bees.

Enjoy the beauty of the Blue Banded Bee. Captured this little one yesterday in the garden. They are a solitary native Australian bee. They don't produce honey but they are very important as they are buzz pollinators. This means they get flowers to release pollen by vibrating their wings.

In this quick instructional video Karla from Mountain Feed & Farm Supply shows us how to light your beekeepers smoker and keep it lit! Karla demonstrates and discusses fuel sources for a beekeepers smoker and methods for diffusing the smoke to keep it cool. Keeping the smoke coming from your beekeeping smoker cool is very important so you don't scorch the wings of your honey bees. Happy beekeeping!
